At a time when headline “DJ’s” shamelessly play pre-programmed, pre-recorded sets and the masses mindlessly embrace the charade, Dieselboy (aka The Destroyer / aka Damian Higgins) stands out as a rare virtuoso of the art and craft of live DJ’ing. His complex, high voltage, take no prisoners performances, have created legions of die-hard fans around the world. Arguably no other DJ mixes live on four decks with more precision, imagination, intensity, energy and finesse.
In the history of electronic dance music, no one comes close to matching his legacy of epic, dramatic mixes. As one of the world’s finest technical DJs, he elevated the themed DJ mix to the realm of fine art. For over two decades as one of the world’s most influential ambassadors of drum and bass, Dieselboy is America’s most iconic underground bass music curator and pioneer.
Dieselboy’s DJ career began in northwest Pennsylvania DJ’ing high school dances. While a student at the University of Pittsburgh, he learned to beat-match vinyl live on college radio and played trance, happy hardcore and breaks at house parties. His 1994 mixtape “The Future Sound of Hardcore” led to out of town bookings and his expanding popularity led to the honor of being the first American asked by a British drum and bass label to mix a compilation (“Drum & Bass Selection USA,” 1996). His steady stream of mix CDs and
mixes, including the highest selling American mix CD “The 6ixth Session (released on Palm Pictures) were listened to around the world.
In 1997 Dieselboy moved to Philadelphia to be the dnb buyer and T-shirt designer for seminal rave culture/record store 611. In 1998 he was the first American to be nominated for Best Drum & Bass DJ at the Global DJ Mix Awards and tied with LTJ Bukem. From 1998 to 2004 Dieselboy hosted North America’s premier drum and bass weekly “Platinum” at Club Fluid in Philadelphia.
In 2000, Palm Pictures released his single “Invid”, which was the first DNB single to chart on Billboard’s dance chart. It was in this year that the US super crew, Planet of the Drums was born, encompassing the biggest US drum and bass warriors, AK1200, DJ Dara, Dieselboy and MC Messinian. They are currently electronic dance music’s longest running and consistently touring collective, now going into their 20th year.
In 2002 Dieselboy started Human Imprint, North America’s most prolific, dynamic and innovative drum and bass label. He is also the co-founder of the bass music label SubHuman under the umbrella of Planet Human. His legacy is also one of non-stop trailblazing dancefloor destruction on the international club circuit as well
as at major global music festivals including Bassrush, Bonnaroo, Coachella, Detroit Electronic Music Festival, Electric Daisy Carnival, SXSW, Ultra Music Festival, Shambhala, Global Gathering (UK), the list goes on to include many other International Festivals. In 2019 he has continued to produce music and release mixes regularly, such as “Heart of Darkness’ and single “Stagediver”, as well as take on new creative endeavors. He has recently become the Design Director for fantasy / metal themed streetwear brand Death
Saves and freelance Creative Director for shows developed by East Coast festival production legends “Steez Promo”.
An inspiration for generations of DJ’s, Dieselboy’s longevity and relevance in a mercurial industry is a tribute to his relentless drive to create “amazing” experiences for his fans in their headphones and at his infamously explosive live shows.
Dieselboy fans praise his skills as “genius.” Says The Destroyer: “I don’t fuck around.”
